finding quiet in a noisy world...

Hey Reader,

I'm sitting here in an empty house (well, except for my cat Marley) listening to the quiet. No noise other than the cat fountain, the house fan circulating air, and some far off traffic noise from outdoors. My mind is drifting from thing to thing, wanting to land somewhere but not sure where to go.

And it's in this quiet that I realize two things.

I need more of it. And I used to avoid it completely.

This is not something I could have done years ago. Until a few years ago I couldn't go for a walk without headphones...not even a hike in the forest. That's right...the woman who now leads people into on mindful walks used to fill every walk with a podcast. It felt productive. And it felt safe.

What I didn't realize then was that I was outsourcing my inner quiet to someone else's voice...filling every gap so I didn't have to sit with my own thoughts. Because my inner voice wasn't very kind back then. And silence gave it too much airtime.

Until one day (based on a friends suggestion) I decided to give it a try. It was uncomfortable at first. But after a few minutes of swirling, my thoughts began to settle down and notice things like the crunch of leaves, the birds, the river nearby...

And now? I crave it. I crave time to sit with the trees, walk through my neighborhood or even sit here in a quiet house, and let my brain float from thing to thing without holding on too tightly.

Getting here took practice. Sometimes just a minute at a time because that's all I could take. And a lot of work unsticking those old stories that would rise up the moment things got still. But slowly quiet stopped feeling like a threat.

I know moments like this feel rare. There's almost always something playing in the background...someone trying to grab our attention. We're so hyperconnected and always-on (even in our own minds) that quiet has become a luxury.

And I think that's exactly why we need it more than ever.

So this week my only invitation is this...try one thing without the background noise.

No extra input from the outside world. No podcast, no music, no scrolling, nothing playing in the background. Just you and whatever’s in front of you.

A walk with no earbuds. Washing dishes and actually listening to the water, the clink, the warmth on your hands. Cooking and noticing the sizzle. Driving with nothing playing on the radio.

Just a few minutes of you, present with whatever's around you.

And if this is already part of your life…beautiful. See if you can stretch it a little longer this week.

And if it still feels a little scary or you're not sure where to start...hit reply. Let's come up with a quiet plan just for you.

Sending love and quiet vibes,

Chris

Hey Reader, A few weeks ago, I sent an email where I joked about wanting to pack a bag and run away to the forest. The truth is… it wasn’t entirely a joke. Lately, I keep coming back to the same idea and desire (one I've had for a few years): creating spaces where people can step away from the noise and busyness of everyday life for a few hours (or maybe even overnight) and simply breathe. No packed itinerary or pressure to “transform.” Just cozy places near nature with room to wander, time...

My main caregiver last week - Marley! I've been sick for over a week. What started as a bad cold in June turned into a sinus infection in July. By Monday, I knew I needed to rest. Not “kind of” rest either…actually rest. The lie down and do nothing kind. And I was going to. I really was. But then the Should Monster showed up. You know this voice. It doesn't come in loud, demanding and hissing because that would be too easy to dismiss. It comes in reasonable. It comes in small like…You should...

The view from a cabin I stayed at back in 2019. It was one of my regular solo getaways where I take time to rest and reconnect. Do You Ever Want to Run Away to the Forest? To be in a cabin where all you hear is the nearby river... the birds... the trees. The animals rustling around outside. You read. You live off the land. You walk the forest. You create, with no one watching and nowhere to be.Or is that just me? This has been showing up in my journal a lot lately. This pull toward a life...
