Do you ever want to run away to a cabin in the forest?

Do You Ever Want to Run Away to the Forest?

To be in a cabin where all you hear is the nearby river... the birds... the trees. The animals rustling around outside. You read. You live off the land. You walk the forest. You create, with no one watching and nowhere to be.

Or is that just me?

This has been showing up in my journal a lot lately. This pull toward a life that's rich, but not rich in stuff. Rich in space.

I've been sitting with it, trying to name what it actually is. And I think it's this... groundedness. Calm. Not rushed. A life on my own terms, at my own pace.

Here's the thing though. I could actually go get that cabin. I could bring my cat Marley, figure out where my husband fits into the picture later (maybe he gets his own cabin 😬), and just... go. But I know myself. I'd get bored after a while. The cabin isn't actually the thing I want. Okay, maybe I do want it a little bit...but not full-time.

So back to that feeling. When I picture it... the work I'm doing to live off the land, the walking, the reading, everything on my own terms, when I want, how I want... that's the feeling I've been quietly trying to build into my actual life for the past ten years. Without even realizing it.

It started in 2015.

That was the first time I took myself on a solo retreat. Not just a vacation. A trip where I wanted quiet. No phone. No internet. Just nature, me and my journal. Trips like these are where I feel the most connected to myself...my dreams, ideas and intuition.

I kept doing it, almost once a year after that. Sometimes a spa, sometimes a cabin. And by the end of a few days, I was always ready to come home. But the peaceful cabin feeling never lasted. I'd get swept back up in the everyday.

These days I have practices. Routines. Rhythms and rituals I can actually tap into. And still... I want to slow down more. I want to live at my pace, not the one the world keeps handing me.

And I have a feeling, if you're building something or leading others, you've felt that tension too... wanting more space, without walking away from everything you've created.

I want enough room in my life to just... be. To tap into that groundedness whenever I need it, not just once a year on a trip.

I don't fully have it figured out. But if you've ever thought about running away to the forest, and you know that's not exactly practical... here's what I'm exploring instead, to bring that feeling into the everyday.

A Few Invitations For You This Week

  1. Take one meal completely alone and unplugged. No phone, no podcast, no scrolling. Just you and the food and whatever sounds are actually in the room.
  2. Go outside before you touch a screen. Even five minutes. Let yourself meet the day before the internet does.
  3. Pick one thing you'd do "at the cabin" and do it this week, right where you are. Read for an hour. Take a slow walk with nowhere to be. Make something with your hands just because.
  4. Notice where you're keeping pace with something that isn't yours. An app, a trend, a should. You don't need a cabin to opt out. You just need to notice you're allowed to.
  5. Ask yourself: what does groundedness feel like in my body? Not think about. Feel. That's the thing you're actually chasing. Not the forest. The feeling.

You don't need to escape to the woods to find this. You just need permission (and a few practices) to slow down right where you already are.

If you're craving this but aren't sure how to actually build it into your real life, this is exactly what I help people explore. My Spark Sessions are a place to pause and work together to start creating more space in a way that actually fits your life and work.

And if part of you is thinking… no, I actually do want the cabin for a few days...I can help there too. I love helping people think through intentional solo getaways that actually give you the space you’re craving. Book some time on my calendar and let's chat about what that might look like for you.

Book a Time to Chat

Before you go....I'd love to know...

What's your version of the cabin in the woods? Would it be a hut on the beach or maybe a lodge in the mountains? What would you do there? Hit reply and tell me... I read and reply to every single email.

Sending love and cabin in the forest vibes,

Chris

Two images of mushrooms both growing out of green moss by trees.

Two tiny mushrooms in moss that I noticed on a walk. Someone asked me this week how to go from knowing they need to rest to actually resting. And I wish I had an easy answer for that question. Because the truth is…you can know you need to rest and still never actually rest. It’s just like any other habit you’re trying to build: You can know you need to exercise more and still not exercise. You can know you need to eat healthier and still buy the junk food. That’s the strange thing about...

Sunrise at the beach As you read this, I’ve already had my feet in the sand. I’m at the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a few days, and I’ve been getting up before sunrise to walk down to the water. Which, if you know me, is a little funny…not the sunrise part since I’m an early riser but the beach part. I’m not really a beach person. I’d rather be traipsing through the woods somewhere in the mountains. But sunrise at the beach? That’s something else entirely. There’s something about...

What my recess looked like this week - biking on a rail trail in MD. Remember recess as a kid? It was just a given that we would take a break in the middle of the day. Lunch, recess, and then come back to class. We accept that for kids. We would never say “you need to power through” to an eight-year-old. So why do we say that to ourselves? Is it because we’ve “grown up”? That kids need those breaks and adults don’t? That this is just how we “adult”? Maybe. But I also think that we carry a lot...
