There's always later...until there isn't.

I practice savoring. I teach savoring. And now I'm really practicing it to the extreme.

For medical reasons, I can now only have one cup of coffee a day. 🥺

In the before times (when I could have more than a cup), I used to savor my first few sips. Now? I savor that whole freaking cup of coffee.

I don't gulp it down. I let the smell linger. I notice how the coffee rolls over my tongue, the warmth of the cup in my hands, and the taste of the darkly roasted beans...yum...

I'm making the most of every last sip.

Doing this for the past few days has me thinking about how often we rush through things because we assume they'll always be there.

We'll take that walk tomorrow. Catch up with that friend next week. Read that book when things settle down. Spend more time outside when we have a little more breathing room.

There's always later....until there isn't.

No day is promised, and sometimes we need a little reminder that the ordinary things we have access to today are worth paying attention to. Because we might not have them tomorrow.

  • A walk outdoors, even if it's only five minutes.
  • A conversation with someone you love.
  • Lighting a candle and enjoying the moment.
  • Sitting down with a good book.

We don't have to wait until something is limited or taken away to appreciate it.

Savoring is a way to slow down but it's also a way to appreciate. To notice what's right in front of us instead of rushing through it to get to whatever comes next.

My invitation for you this week:

Choose something to savor.

It might be something you do every day or something you haven't made time for in a while.

Don't rush it. Notice the details. Let yourself enjoy it.

And here's something to think about:

When was the last time you really let yourself enjoy something without rushing on to the next thing?

Sending love and savoring vibes,

Chris

My bike Big Red on our last prep ride on a local wooded trail before the tour. I'm unplugging a bit this week... not completely, but enough to get out of my routines and onto a bike. I'll be pedaling through Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah with my husband and a tour group. We haven’t done a biking trip in years and I’m soooooo excited! And my only real intention for this trip? Be there. I want to soak in the sights and sounds. To be present with my husband as we pedal along the coast. To...

Legs propped up on a rock with hiking boots on at river with trees lining either side.

Hey Reader, I think I hit a nerve this week. I asked my mastermind group about their relationship with their phones. What do you love about it? What do you hate—or wish were different? Boy, did they have a lot to share! And yes, I kind of knew this was a hot topic...but not this hot🔥 Some of it was what you might expect. The scrolling. The distractions. Picking up your phone to do one thing and somehow ending up doing something else entirely. But there were also things I hadn’t thought about....

Shenandoah River, tree turning red in fall, two turtles sitting on log

Shenandoah River, tree turning red in fall, two turtles sitting on log Sometimes it takes a few days away from our daily routine to remember how much we miss when we’re moving too fast. And yes, I help people slow down and unplug, and even I need reminders like this too. This weekend I’ve been in West Virginia with friends, soaking up time in nature. I’ve noticed the river. The turtles. The one tree turning colors…yes, only one! I’ve also noticed how our conversations went deeper than...
