What time away helps us remember…

Sometimes it takes a few days away from our daily routine to remember how much we miss when we’re moving too fast.

And yes, I help people slow down and unplug, and even I need reminders like this too.

This weekend I’ve been in West Virginia with friends, soaking up time in nature. I’ve noticed the river. The turtles. The one tree turning colors…yes, only one!

I’ve also noticed how our conversations went deeper than expected. How a random game at the house we stayed in led to lots of laughter that carried into the next day…even on our steep climbs.

Of course, maybe the laughing is what kept us going up the trail. 🤷🏼‍♀️

And yes, I noticed some scrolling on our phones too while we were all together. We actually had a conversation about it (and no, I wasn’t the one who brought it up!)…how we went away together and yet still found ourselves scrolling, gaming, checking in on our devices.

All of this noticing led me to think about how different it feels to actually be where you are — and with the people you’re with.

Not just occupying the same space as the trees, the river, the trail, or the people.

But being a little more available to what’s right in front of you. A little more here. A little more present.

Maybe that’s one of the things time away from our daily routines gives us.

A reminder of what it feels like to actually be where we are.

In the conversation. On the walk. With the person sitting across from us.

And maybe some of that can come home with us and live in our everyday lives.

Until next week….

Sending love and presence vibes,

Chris

What my daily self-care looks like...a walk outdoors each morning. Last week, I was on a call when someone asked: How do I show up for myself other than on my self-care day? That question has stuck with me because it's at the core of my work...and I don't think we talk about enough. We treat self-care like something we put on the calendar for later. The massage, the day off, the retreat, the digital detox. And I love those things. But if that's the only place your self-care lives, it's not...

My magnetic words from this morning that turned into my wish for you. I was talking with a friend earlier this week about how tired she was and the heaviness of it all. Work. Life. The world. All the things. At one point, she got teary and said something like, “What is this all for?” And I got it. I've been there. And I go back there from time to time. There are times when you look around and wonder: Is this it? We work. We take care of others, our work and all of our "adult"...

Two images of mushrooms both growing out of green moss by trees.

Two tiny mushrooms in moss that I noticed on a walk. Someone asked me this week how to go from knowing they need to rest to actually resting. And I wish I had an easy answer for that question. Because the truth is…you can know you need to rest and still never actually rest. It’s just like any other habit you’re trying to build: You can know you need to exercise more and still not exercise. You can know you need to eat healthier and still buy the junk food. That’s the strange thing about...
