The road to boredom (and maybe clarity)...

When was the last time you were bored?

If you're reading this on Sunday morning, I'm somewhere on 95/NJ Turnpike heading north to the Catskills in New York.

In silence. (Or at least trying to be in silence...)

That's right. No music. No podcasts. No audiobooks. Just me, the road, and four hours of nothing but my own thoughts and road noise. It's an experiment and I'm not sure how it will go. Four hours on the road in silence is....a lot... 😬

Why the experiment? It's my way of prepping for the next few days. You see, I'm unplugging completely Sunday, Monday and most of Tuesday. No music. No books. No screens. Just walking in nature, silence, and whatever wants to emerge when I stop filling every moment with input.

My goal is to get bored. Why? Because I want to get bored enough that my thoughts finally slow down. I'm curious about what insights are waiting on the other side of all that mental noise.

It usually takes a lot of journaling and walking to get my mind to settle down on trips, so I thought I'd start in the car on the way up. Oh, and feel free to send me your guess on how long I'll make it in silence in the car...😂...FYI: I usually ride in silence while doing errands around town but I've never done a road trip in silence.

I have no idea how these next few days are going to go. At the very least, I'll get some sensory, mental, and physical rest. At best? I'll gain some clarity around a few things I'm noodling on.

So here's my question to you this week: When's the last time you let yourself be truly bored?

Maybe try it this week. See what happens.

Sending love and silent vibes,

Chris

P.S.
I've got a few "unplug and unwind" sessions happening this week - virtually and in-person in the Baltimore area. These are spaces for you to slow down and find some calm during this busy season. You can find all the info on my events page...it's not too late to sign up!

🌿 Unplugged Practice

Quick grounding practices to help you slow down and reconnect.

This Week's Practice: Mindful Boredom

That's right! Create a pocket of boredom...on purpose.

Drive somewhere in complete silence.
Stand in line without picking up your phone.
Sit on the couch with nothing to “do.”

Let your mind wander until it slows down on its own or you can't take it anymore.

Notice what happens in that empty space.

Do your thoughts soften?
Or do they race?
Maybe they soften after racing...

How does it feel to be bored?

See what rises when you stop filling the space.

Sundays Unplugged is your weekly reminder to slow down and create space for you. Remember, while your work, your people, and your life matters… so do you.

If this resonated, feel free to forward it to someone who might need this reminder too.

Three pictures side by side - moon at night, trees through window, small fir tree.

Nature from my NY trip: Early morning moon, trees from my AirStream, little fir tree on hike. Last week I headed to New York to spend a few days unplugged - driving up in complete silence, hoping boredom would lead to insights and clarity. Here's what actually happened... I drove the entire four hours in silence and enjoyed it (I'm as shocked as anyone). But about 90 minutes after arriving and getting settled in my room, I was bored. And then found myself caught in swirls of uncertainty and...

Sunrise through trees

Sunrise in my backyard. It's the calmest moment of my day. What if took a moment or two...just for you? Have you noticed it yet? That feeling that time is both racing ahead and running out all at once? We're in that stretch now...you know the one...where the holidays are approaching and the year-end is looming. The to-do lists are multiplying and so much needs to get done. The world feels heavy, and yet we're supposed to somehow summon “holiday spirit” while it all swirls around us. And in...

Hey Reader, It's Thanksgiving week here in the US and it's got me (and so many others) thinking about what we're thankful for. My question to you is.... What if we started saying "thank you" to ourselves? You are the one person who is always with you. Every moment of every day. Why wouldn't you thank yourself? For many of us, others always come first. We deeply appreciate what they've done for us, yet dismiss our own accomplishments as "no big deal." Maybe that's just me, but... I'm imagining...
